Your room

Help us to help you

The college’s accommodation is very important to the students who live and work here. However, it’s inevitable that some damage will occur.
To help us keep your rooms in good condition we’d like you to let us know about any issues with your study bedroom and communal areas as soon as possible either through faults@lmh.ox.ac.uk or directly with the Housekeeping team via your Scout.  We can then put the problem right or schedule some remedial work later in the year. If problems go unreported they can get worse – the sooner you tell us, the sooner we can help.

As well as reporting any problems with your room, we so also ask you to take care not to damage the room yourself or do anything which could cause deterioration beyond reasonable wear and tear. Damage from blu tak, LED lights or other adhesives which damage the state of walls will be considered to be unacceptable wear and tear – please use the noticeboards provided.

Community Living

We try to keep rules about personal behaviour within College to a minimum, but we do have a few in place to reduce noise and disturbance, maintain safety and security and provide for emergencies. You can find a full copy of the College Regulations on the LMH website https://www.lmh.ox.ac.uk/about-lmh/further-information/college-documents

The University's regulations and agreements also apply to students when in College.

Fire Safety

Fire safety is paramount. The College carries out many activities such as evacuation drills and emergency lighting tests to maintain a safe environment, however, we also need all members of our community to adhere to the instructions, guidance and rules in place. Key points to consider are:

  • You are responsible for the electrical safety for anything you bring in to College
  • Keep any doors marked as 'fire doors' closed at all times
  • Don’t obstruct corridors and escape routes
  • Don't interfere with fire safety equipment
  • Familiarise yourself with procedures and escape routes as soon as you can - you will find a fire safety notice in each room
  • Be sensible - candles and rice cookers are not permitted in bedrooms for a reason

If you discover a fire, leave the building by the nearest fire escape route - don't wait to collect belongings and don't use the lifts. Break the fire glass to sound the alarm on the way out.  Wait at your designated assembly point until you are informed that it is safe to return to the building.

Fire alarm testing is carried out every Monday between 1.15 and 2pm.

Security

Help us by:

  • Ensuring doors are locked when rooms are not in use, and not keeping doors or windows artificially open - don't leave your bedroom unlocked, even for short periods
  • Reporting lost keys and fobs to the Lodge immediately
  • Not transferring keys or fobs
  • Alerting the Porters' Lodge to any suspicious people or activities

If you are living in College you are permitted to have occasional non-paying overnight guests but you must sign them in at the Lodge, meet them at the Lodge on arrival and escort them out when they leave.

Bedroom Inventories

During the Academic Year the College conducts an inventory of all student bedrooms, to help us check that the correct furniture and fittings are provided and to record the condition of the room and its fixtures. Rooms will be routinely checked against this inventory in order to help us maintain and improve the standard of our accommodation; we will use this record as a comparison and if we notice that the room or its contents have deteriorated significantly beyond reasonable wear and tear then we may charge you what it costs us to put it right.
